Michael Bublé – “Crazy Love” Tour
Brisbane Entertainment Centre
Friday 11th February 2011
- Gareth H

Michael’s “Crazy Love” tour kicked off on its Australian leg with a shower of fireworks at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre Friday. From the first note to the last encore Michael was simply spectacular. The auditorium was packed to the rafters with adoring fans, young and old alike. This night was a milestone for our family, being the first time our two kids (Tim, 9 and Jess, 6) had been to see a concert. And what a wonderful introduction to live music it was for them. They are both big fans of “The Bube”, they know the words to all his hits but their favourite album is his first (Michael Bublé – self titled – 2003).

A couple of songs in to the show, Michael introduced us to his band. This is when his mischievous sense of humour and his loving connection with the people around him started to show through. For Michael, to simply introduce his band “family” would not do, he had a funny (and I’m sure mostly untrue) story to share about each and every member of the band.In the second half of the show, Michael made his way through the crowd to a second stage where to the delight of all of us in the “cheap seats” he belted out a few more songs. He was only 10 meters from us and I could feel his charisma radiating over the crowd. Jess was on my shoulders at this stage and was so overwhelmed with everything going on around her, she didn’t realise Michael was talking to her when he waved and said “Hello Beautiful”!

From the crooner classics like “For Once In My Life” and “Cry Me A River” to his chart toppers like “Home”, “Just Haven’t Met You Yet” and “Hollywood” there was something for everyone in this show. The people around us ranged in age from 20 to 60 and I could not spot one person who didn’t sing along at some stage. And this is what makes Michael Bublé’s music so popular, it doesn’t matter if you are not a huge fan – there will be at least one song that you know and love.

The pace of the show was perfect, slow when it needed to be then upbeat for the more modern numbers. The fans were adoring, screaming for every single one of his famous hip-swivels.

For a concert with an audience of around 12,000 people the feeling was amazingly intimate. The excellent use of video screens and lost of camera close-ups meant that everyone could see perfectly. Production values throughout the show were of the high standard we have grown to expect from international touring artists. The lighting and sound were at their best and used with maximum effect and minimal impact, simply blending in with Michael and the bands beautiful performance.

Having spent a night in the company of this amazing showman, it’s easy to understand why he called the tour “Crazy Love”. Yes, I know it’s named after the Van Morrison cover which is the title track of his latest album. But it is also a wonderful description of what he brings across in the show; Crazy – because Michael is a little bit crazy in an amusing and entertaining way; and, Love – because there wouldn’t be a single person who could walk out at the end of the concert and not have felt the love and amazing sense of connection that Michael has with his audience. Here is a lucky man who truly enjoys what he does.

Do yourselves a favour even if you only go to one show this year – make it Michael’s “Crazy Love” tour.  An evening with Michael is an evening well spent.
